I have to wear a lot of different hats as a member of a lean startup’s three-person marketing team, which also includes the co-founder, in order to take advantage of opportunities to raise awareness among our target demographic.

It goes without saying that leveraging an influencer is an effective strategy if you want to tap into such a broad spread. Simply because it offers a quicker way to reach your target audience and establish yourself as a leader in your field.

We wrote a lot of blog posts with quotes and suggestions from influencers, so it’s crucial to get in touch with them to let them know about our work and, more importantly, to convince them to share it with their followers (aka our target audience).

We weren’t simply seeking for shares; we also wanted to establish a connection so that we could support each other’s enterprises as they expand.

In light of this, over the course of five months I created and sent 446 emails to influencers (I felt cool at this number so I stopped counting after that).

The outreach advice you’ll find here is the result of that experience, which involved learning quickly and aggressively, failing, making adjustments, failing again, and ultimately succeeding.

1. Summarize in your email’s subject line

You may be considering how to succinctly condense a lengthy pitch. How then do you condense a 2,000 word blog piece into a 140 character tweet? It’s just a restriction that cannot be disregarded. You must thus think of original ways to engage the reader.

2. Establish your authority

I tried to republish our article on eye tracking on The Next Web as my first guest post, swinging for the fences. Since I was somewhat unknown and we kind of thought that the editor wouldn’t respond, the odds weren’t in my favor.

Joe Putnam deserves credit for this piece of wisdom. Regardless of your level of experience, he asserts, “You’re as much a professional as they are” (or inexperience). If all you have to offer is fanboyism, that’s a complete turn-off.

I will admit that when I initially started doing outreach, I simply copied and pasted existing email templates. It appeared to be a secure and effective method of contacting decision-makers. And I can confirm that templates do, in fact, function.

6. Ensure that both parties profit

Don’t expect something in return for nothing. Someone of importance needs to find value in working with you if they are going to take the time.

7. Always check in with your pitch

This is the final advice I can provide you, and it’s also the greatest.

Show your personality and be yourself. Make the advantages to the influencer evident. Always check back.

As long as there is something in it for them and you are persistent, getting influencers to respond is not that tough.
